About PureSil™ Paints

The Science of Sustainability

For too long, the industry has relied on conventional petrochemical paints that degrade over time and impact the environment. We believe there is a better way. Relic Coatings LLP was founded on the principles of advanced material science and sustainable engineering. By harnessing the power of inorganic chemistry, we develop coatings that do not just sit on the surface, but chemically bond with it. Our approach prioritizes environmental stewardship, utilizing sustainable materials to drastically reduce the carbon footprint and global warming potential (GWP) of our products.

The Visionary Behind the Technology

Dr. Nikhil Dhote | Founder & Chief Technologist, PureSil Paints

Pioneering the Eco-Mineral Revolution in Coatings

Dr. Nikhil Dhote is the Founder and Chief Technologist at Relic Coatings LLP, and the visionary scientific mind behind the formulation of PureSil mineral silicate paints. Leveraging over a decade and a half of specialized expertise in inorganic chemistry, he has pioneered a fundamental shift in how architectural coatings are manufactured, applied, and maintained. By turning away from conventional, synthetic film-forming plastics, Dr. Dhote built PureSil on the foundational principles of eco-mineral technology. His work is critically important because it successfully bridges the gap between high-performance architectural durability and uncompromising ecological responsibility. Through his leadership, Dr. Dhote is proving that sustainable, non-toxic building materials can actively outperform their synthetic counterparts without demanding a steep environmental or financial cost.

A Foundation in Rigorous Academic Research

Dr. Dhote’s relentless pursuit of material innovation is deeply rooted in his distinguished academic background. He holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the highly esteemed Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (ACSIR) at the CSIR-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) in Nagpur. Over the course of a career spanning more than 15 years, his research and professional specialization have focused squarely on the complexities of inorganic chemistry and industrial mineralogy. This deep technical immersion allowed him to understand the exact molecular behavior of raw earth minerals and industrial by-products. His time at CSIR-NEERI ingrained in him a rigorous, evidence-based approach to solving environmental challenges, laying the crucial scientific groundwork for what would eventually become the proprietary PureSil formulation.

Solving the Crisis of the Indian Repaint Cycle

The genesis of PureSil was born out of a glaring, persistent problem in the Indian construction sector. Dr. Dhote observed that modern Indian buildings were caught in a relentless, expensive, and ultimately toxic cycle of repainting every three to five years. Conventional solvent-based acrylic paints, which are essentially liquid plastics, were consistently failing in the face of India’s harsh UV radiation, heavy monsoon rains, and naturally porous masonry. These synthetic paints formed a topical, non-breathable seal over walls, trapping moisture inside the building envelope and invariably leading to widespread blistering, peeling, and chalking. Beyond the frustrating structural failures, Dr. Dhote recognized the hidden, devastating costs of this cycle: the immense environmental burden of manufacturing continuous batches of synthetic resin, the massive generation of paint-derived microplastics shedding into local ecosystems, and the severe health impacts on building occupants caused by the off-gassing of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and highly toxic biocides.

The Breakthrough of Silicification and the Circular Economy

Determined to engineer a permanent solution, Dr. Dhote looked away from polymer plastics and toward the ancient, proven science of mineral silicates. His defining breakthrough was the successful, scalable commercialization of silicification chemistry specifically adapted for the Indian architectural market. Instead of creating a paint that merely sits on top of the wall, he developed an advanced inorganic chemical bonding process. By utilizing potassium silicate (often referred to as waterglass), the paint chemically fuses with the natural calcium present in masonry. This microcrystalline bond effectively petrifies the paint into the substrate itself, making peeling or flaking physically impossible.

Furthermore, Dr. Dhote achieved a monumental feat in advancing the Circular Economy of Coatings. He successfully engineered a method to upcycle highly reactive industrial waste streams—specifically agricultural rice husk ash (RHA) and coal fly ash—converting them into a premium, hyper-durable binder. This innovation not only diverted thousands of tons of waste from landfills but also drastically lowered the embodied carbon footprint of the final PureSil product.

Driven by Indigenous Innovation and Accessibility

As a Nagpur-based scientist, Dr. Dhote is driven by a profound commitment to developing indigenous, world-class technology tailored specifically for Indian buildings and local climatic challenges. He firmly believes that the broader transition to eco-friendly building practices is consistently hindered by the “green premium”—the industry norm where sustainable products are priced out of reach for average consumers and large-scale commercial developers. Through rigorous scientific optimization and a highly efficient, localized supply chain, he ensured PureSil remained commercially competitive, completely eliminating the financial barrier to green building.

“The future of sustainable architecture doesn’t lie in creating new synthetic compounds, but in our ability to look at an industrial waste stream and see the molecular foundation for decades of architectural durability.” — Dr. Nikhil Dhote

His life’s work at Relic Coatings LLP continues to prove that zero-VOC, environmentally restorative coatings are no longer just a premium luxury, but the necessary new standard for the built environment.
